Fear is a survival mechanism and our capacity for fear is related to our survival. Fear alerts us to dangers that threaten our well being and sometimes even our lives. Our evolved physiological makeup causes us to fear potential threats, even those that exist only in our imaginations.
A phobia is defined as an irrational fear of an object or situation that the affected person will go to great lengths to avoid, typically disproportional to the actual danger posed. If the feared object or situation cannot be avoided, they will endure it with marked distress and anxiety.
